Title Lessons from the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004

[ Summary ] Discontinuation of dialysis therapy is inevitable in disasters, because of a lack of water, electricity and gas even though the building may be preserved. Damage to water preparation machines and dialysate mixing machines, due to damage incurred during moves or from it falling over, led to a reduction in dialysis delivery in three facilities after the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004. In spite of this, well organized co-operation between remote facilities and rest homes in this district was successful in supplying treatment to patients. Collection, transmission and standardization of information through the use of high-tech as well as low-tech methods was important. Urgent evacuation methods for those restrained by hemodialysis, and correct methods for locking the wheels of free standing consoles were reevaluated in a new light.
