[ Summary ] Parathyroid glands often have a great deal of variability in terms of location and number. Preoperative diagnostic imaging of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands contributes to the recognition of accurate localization and detection of ectopic parathyroid glands, as well as a decrease in surgical complications. A variety of imaging methods such as US, scintigraphy, CT and MRI have been used to localize abnormal parathyroid glands. In this review, the procedures, and merits and problems with each modality are described.
