[ Summary ] Through the blood-aqueous barrier, which is one of the blood-ocular barriers, plasma and aqueous humors are closely connected by diffusion, percolation, and active connections. However, if dialyzing changes plasma, it is thought that aqueous humors are also influenced. Crystalline lenses are metabolized by aqueous humors, which may cause changes in acid-base balance with dialysis, and may cause the progression of cataracts through ectopic calcification. The cornea is also metabolized by aqueous humors. Accordingly, it is possible that corneal calcification is also due to ectopic calcification, which is a reflection of changes in aqueous humors. There is a possibility that retinal vein occlusion is caused by undue use of erythropoietin and by ectopic calcification. Diabetic retinopathy is stabilized because of the decrease of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) in the aqueous humor with the efficacy of dialysis.
