[ Summary ] Although the pathogenesis of hypertension in hemodialysis patients is multifactorial, volume overload is the major factor. Furthermore, the activated renin-angiotensin system and the sympathetic nervous system play important roles. Control of volume and sodium intake has been shown to normalize blood pressure and improve predictors of survival. To control hypertension in hemodialysis patients, understanding the pathogenesis in individual patients is important. Treatments for hypertension which can improve these predictors, is recommended.
