[ Summary ] Some individuals show a rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) during dialysis. This phenomenon is believed to be involved with a dialysis disequilibrium syndrome.
Dialysis causes a decrease in serum osmotic pressure, leading to an osmotic gradient between the plasma and the intraocular fluid, due to the blood-ocular barrier. This results in the movement of water from the plasma into the eye. If the individual has the complication of a disturbance in the fluid outflow from the eye, IOP will increase. As these individuals show high IOP only during dialysis, it is often difficult to diagnose early. Individuals complaining of blurred vision and / or ocular pain should undergo a glaucoma examination, it will be necessary to change the method of dialysis to prevent an increase in IOP or to treat glaucoma.
