[ Summary ] Chronic uremic patients on dialysis often have risk factors for anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), such as hypertension, atherosclerosis (increased resistance) and anemia (low blood oxygen carrying capacity). In these patients, AION is occasionally induced by acute hypotension after dialysis in combination with the above conditions. Although visual prognosis is generally poor, immediate restoration of hypotension is effective in some cases. Therefore, close collaboration among nephrologists and ophthalmologists is important when AION occurs in chronic uremic patients.
