[ Summary ] Although recent progress in dialysis techniques has brought about a marked improvement in the prognosis for patients on regular dialysis, they are still confronted with various problems, including shorter survival time and many complications preventing better quality of life. The non-physiological and incomplete functions of present artificial kidney systems are contributing causes of those problems. Consequently, new treatment strategies have been hoped for and daily hemodialysis (DHD) is now a reliable candidate. It has been reported that DHD is effective for better control of blood pressure, anemia, nutritional conditions and QOL. But there are many problems to be solved before the wide application of DHD as an artificial kidney system can begin.
