[ Summary ] Nutritional management for renal transplant recipients is very important to maintain grafted renal functions and to prevent lifestyle related diseases, such as hypertention, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, because those conditions have been reported as risk factors for ischemic heart disease and as significant risk factors for patient death and graft failure.
Nutritional management consists of protein restriction, salt restriction, adequate calorie and bodyweight control. It is important to recommend the proper treatment according to renal graft functions, the condition of the patient and the patient's life style. Continuing care by the transplant surgeon, the renal physician, and the nutritional staff team is effective in obtaining long graft suvival and patient survival.
