[ Summary ] Enteral nutrition is more physiologically practical than parental nutrition. We should choose enteral nutrition as long as the intestines are viable. There are three roots for enteral nutrition ; via the nose, via the stomach, and via the intestines. Recently, nasogastric tube or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) have become prevalent modes. These techniques are useful even for dialysis patients. Since dialysis patients are restricted to having water, minerals and protein, total enteral nutrition was impossible in the past. However enteral feeding has been developed even for patients with renal failure. Good NST functioning is important in enteral nutrition, especially since the role of dietitians is increasing. Educational programs for clinical dietitians have become necessary in Japan.
