[ Summary ] Vascular access with stable function is one of the most fundamental key points for continuing maintenance hemodialysis adequately. In Japan, almost all hemodialysis patients need to be placed on this therapy for the long term, chiefly because a system of renal transplantation is not yet in place.
Consequently, it is essential that attention be given to vascular access of any type, which must be used for an extended time. Bearing in mind that the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy is now preparing its own guideline for creation, maintenance and repair of vascular access, guidelines for vascular access published in several countries were reviewed and discussed.
