[ Summary ] Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the main type of dialysis therapy for end stage renal disease in children. Fifty to sixty patients under fifteen begin PD every year and about two hundred patients are under continuing treatment with PD. As with adult PD patients in Japan, the survival rate and rates of peritonitis are very good for Japanese PD children, compared with childhood PD patients in other countries. Pediatric patients tend to require cyclers, and high glucose concentrations of dialysates and along with adequate nutrition for growth. Forty three percent of pediatric PD patients have transplants. The duration of PD is long in Japan, so the frequency of EPS in Japanese PD children is as high as that for adults.
