[ Summary ] The major predisposing factors related to pediatric renal insufficiency are basically renal hypo / dysplasia, obstructive nephropathy and reflux nephropathy. These 3 factors independently or together cause renal insufficiency in the pediatric patients. Hypo / dysplastic kidneys often result from severe urinary tract obstructions in the fetus, for which no prophylactic treatment has been established yet. In obstructive uropathy, the sites of obstruction (upper or lower urinary tract) and bilaterality are important for the development of renal insufficiency and its clinical onset is generally acute. In reflux nephropathy, the development of renal insufficiency is usually slower. In this article, the efficacy of the timely removal of obstructions and anti-bacterial chemotherapy as well as anti-reflux surgery are discussed.
