[ Summary ] One complication with long term hemodialysis is the biocompatibility of dialysis-membranes. Markers of hemodialysis biocompatibility have been reported in various ways, and at this time the utility of serum neopterin has been evaluated.
Neopterin can leave products from the macrophages due to the influence of gamma-IFN secreted by T-lymphocytes, which are revitalized by various forms of stimulation. An experiment concerning extracorporeal circulation, useing a membrane, was performed in order to evaluate changes in neopterin in dogs. Furthermore, a similar trial was done with a dialysis patient. Serum neopterin rose with the progress of extracorporeal circulation, the utility of neopterin as a biocompatibility marker was suggested.
It was also suggested that neopterin was useful for biocompatibility evaluation of dialysis membranes.
