[ Summary ] Several kinds of biomaterials are used in hemodialysis treatment. After the contact of the patient's blood with biomaterials. various patient reactions commonly occur during treatment. Several kinds of dialysis membranes have been developed to improve biocompatibility. In this paper, a historical review on membrane science, focusing on biocompatibility, was introduced from a technological viewpoint. In order to avoid fatal incidents related to dialysis membranes, elucidation of the mechanisms of protein adsorption, control of polymer degradation, establishment of quality control assessment and investigation of drug-polymer interactions such as the use of ACE-inhibitors and negatively charged biomaterials will be required in near future.
