[ Summary ] Acute organ failure is caused by many factors. Some of them are oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines and endotoxins. The neutrophil is activated by inflammatory factors in the course of acute organ failure. Blood purification is sometimes an effective treatment for acute organ failure. However, while it eliminates several of the inflammatory factors, it also stimulates some other inflammatory elements. We discussed those relationships and the characteristics of several imflammatory factors, in particular neutrophil activating factors, in relation to acute organ failure.
