[ Summary ] Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has been performed in intensive care units since the 1980s. CRRT is useful for severe azotemia in catabolic illnesses or with multiple organ dysfunction, tumor lysis syndrome, etc. The goal of this review was to summarize the clinical applications for CRRT.
Recently, a great deal of attention has been given to the removal of inflammatory mediaters. New filter membranes with larger surface areas, higher convective permeability and adsorption capacities have been designed for their removal. Therefore, CRRT may be used to remove uremic toxins, such as uremic nitrogen, creatinine, etc. and inflammatory cytokines such as interleukine-1, interleukine-6 etc.
In conclusion, CRRT is useful for severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome which include severe pancreatitis, multiple organ dysfunction, sepsis, and severe heart failure with renal insufficiency.
