[ Summary ] In cases showing beta2-microglobulin (beta2-m) amyloid deposition, in a study of autopsy cases of chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis, the shortest period of hemodialysis was 2 years. The incidence of beta2-m amyloidosis increases as the dialysis period is lengthened.
A histologic feature of beta2-m amyloidosis is macrophage infiltration around deposited amyloid, which is thought to be caused by modification of beta2-m amyloid with advanced glycation end products (AGE).
Immunohistologically, AGE is positive only in amyloid cases treated by hemodialysis for over 10 years. This means that it takes nearly 8 years for deposited beta2-m amyloid to be modified with AGE.
