[ Summary ] Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) was formarly used only for young patients suffering from chronic renal failure. However, recently, CAPD and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) have also been used for elderly patients, for several reasons, such as reducing admission rates, lowering medical expenses and trying to improve quality of life for patients. Examples are given of the infrastructure established for use between hospitals and medical facilities for the management of elderly patients receiving peritoneal dialysis at home. Attending doctors and visiting nurses frequently visit patients to check complications with PD, enabling patients to maintain high levels of health and quality of life.
