[ Summary ] Fluid management and optimal ultrafiltration, as well as solute removal are recognized as crucial determinants of the clinical outcome for PD patients. From a theoretical point of view, glucose is an appropriate osmotic agent for shorter dwell times, therefore, for long dwell times, the osmotic agents should have higher molecular weights. The aim of this review is thus to summarize the findings of recent highly important clinical studies that provide support for the use of the recent most important clinical studies that alternative dialysis solution, icodextrin solution as the standard solution for long dwell times in PD therapy.
