[ Summary ] Low pH, high glucose concentrations, high osmotic pressure, high lactate concentrations and glucose degradation products (GDPs) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution have been noted in the etiology of peritoneal degradation. Neutralized PD solutions were developed to solve low pH and high GDPs problems.
The clinical use of neutralized PD solutions has been confirmed in several reports from Europe and Japan, but a consensus on their use has not been obtained. Opinions differ, particularly concerning ultrafiltration volume or effluent markers. These differences are due to patient background in Europe and Japan.
Therefore, when we ask the question, "What are the results of neutralized PD solutions ?" the answer is not yet clear. However, it is a fact that the study of the biocompatiblity of PD solutions has been advanced through the use of neutralized PD solutions. It will not be long before PD becomes a therapy that is equal to hemodialysis.
