[ Summary ] Home hemodialysis (HHD) was started in our group in 1971. The most important matter in relation to HHD has been achieving high levels of safety. To secure these levels of operational safety, it is indispensable to establish a complete educational system and a management system, which prevents accidents, as well as providing rapid and appropriate countermeasures, if any problems occur. There are great expectations for the development of HHD as a device offering the same efficiency available at dialysis facilities, which can be safely and simply operated by patients themselves. Improvements in social insurance fees for HHD are expected also. It is hope that HUD will play a greater role in the future for those patients who wish to function normally in society, while continuing to undergo dialysis for thirty years or more, and that it will increase the choice of treatments available for patients with chronic renal insufficiency.
