[ Summary ] The guidelines of the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) have been published by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) in the USA. In the guidelines, routine evaluation of nutritional status based on serum albumin, percentage of normal body weight, percentage of standard body weight, subjective global assessment, dietary interviews and/or diaries and nPNA are recommended. To maintain good nutritional status, 1.2g/kg/day of protein intake as well as 30 to 35kcal/kg/day of energy intake is recommended. Adequate management of acid-base status is also encouraged. Nutritional counseling and follow up are recommended every one to two months.
The Japanese Society of Nephrology has also published a guideline for dietary intake in maintenance dialysis patients. In this guideline, a daily intake of 1.0 to 1.2g of protein and 30 to 35kcal of energy per kg of standard body weight, and less than 0.15g of salt and less than 15ml of water intake per kg of dry weight are recommended for patients hemodialyzed three times per week.
