[ Summary ] In uremic woman receiving dialysis, ovarian dysfunction is frequent, which causes menstrual disorders, anovuation, loss of sexual desire and infertility. Hormonal disorders, associated with high level of luteinizing hormone (LH), high level of prolactin, low level of estradiol occur in female dialysis patients with ovarian dysfunction. Many female dialysis patients are able to have regular menstruation periods at the present time. Because pregnancy can occur in uremic women of childbearing age, women on dialysis should be counseled concerning contraception. The use of bromocriptine or rHuEPO, estrogen may help premenopausal dialysis patients recover their regular menstrual cycles. Estrogen is also effective for climacteric syndrome. However, the safety of hormone replacement therapy for female dialysis patients has not been adequately investigated.
