[ Summary ] | Glucose, an almost ubiquitous osmotic agent in CAPD dialysates, has a critical characteristic of forming advanced glycation endproducts (AGE). In contrast, trehalose has a unique chemical structure, forming few AGE. Using hemoglobin (Hb) as a counter-protein for AGE, the superior characteristic of trehalose not to induce glycation on proteins, was demonstrated. It is expected that this "thanksgiving carbohydrate" may be applied clinically as an osmotic agent in CAPD dialysates, and might promise improved survival rates. |
