[ Summary ] Evaluation and monitoring of nutritional status is a fundamental component of providing nutrition care for patients with chronic renal diseases. Assessing nutritional adequacy for patients with chronic glomerulonephritis (or nephrosclerosis) during conservative therapy includes clinical assessment (physical examination and subjective global assessment), anthropometric measurment, body composition analysis by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectro-impedance methods, and analysis of serum albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides as biochemical markers. For nutritional assessment of maintenance dialysis patients, due to chronic glomerulonephritis (or nephrosclerosis), a clinical protocol from the National Kidney Foundation, the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) is available. Recommended methods for monitoring the nutritional status of maintenance dialysis patients by using the ratio K/DOQI produce measurements of predialysis or stabilized albumin, % of usual postdialys is orpostdrain (CAPD) body weight, % of standard body weight, subjective global assessment, dietary interview (and/or diaries),nPNA and others.
