[ Summary ] We reported on the results related to percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of central venous stenosis or occlusion in patients undergoing hemodialysis who had A-V shunts in the ipsilateral region of their arms. The incidence of central venous stenosis was 5.5% in hemodialysis patients in our hospital. We performed PTA alone, in 8 of these cases. Our results showed the primary patency rate was 0% at 11 months, the secondary patency rate was 75% and 75% at 6~36 months, respectively. Although many authors have reported the outcome of PTA as being poor, compared to stent deployment, we experienced long term patency (over 40month) of central venous lesions in 2 cases with repeated PTA.
