[ Summary ] Prescribing adequate dialysis dose and control of fluid balance are vital for chronic dialysis patients. In Japan, the Kt/V has been stable at around 1.3, but the session hours for dialysis have been shortened from 4.30 hours in 1991 to 3.99 hours in 2001. The adjusted hazard ratio of death has been reduced significantly, suggesting an improvement in dialysis therapy as a whole. Early signs of complications are frequent hospitalization, hypoalbuminemia, and malnutrition.
