[ Summary ] Prolonged dialysis treatment duration is one of the best methods to achieve longer patient survival. With this method, the frequency of episodes of intradialysis hypotension, muscle cramps, and postdialysis fatigue are reduced. Furthermore, improvements in blood pressure control, anemia, and nutritional status are observed. However, increased time requirements for dialysis sessions have unfavorable effects on quality of life for patients. There are several quality of life measures for patients on dialysis therapy, but the short form-36 (SF-36) has been one of the most extensively used methods. Both physical component scores (PCS) and mental component scores (MCS) obtained from patients receiving prolonged slow dialysis treatment improve toward the normal range, especially compared with scores for conventional hemodialysis treatment patients.
