[ Summary ] Hyperphosphatemia directly or indirectly contributes to the progression of chronic renal disease and is an important factor in the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and uremic bone disease. Especially in patients with end-stage renal disease, appropriate levels of phosphate and CaxP cannot be achieved by dialysis without the aggressive use of phosphate binders and vitamin D analogs. New therapeutic advances include the development of calcium-free intestinal phosphate binders and non-calcemic vitamin D analogs. Other approaches that could prove fruitfulinclude inhibition of intestinal and renal phosphate transporters.
