[ Summary ] Generally in Japan, sexual problems of patients with chronic diseases such as those requiring hemodialysis are neglected. Even when patients suffer from sexual problems, they do not actively seek help from their doctors. In addition, doctors do not ask patients about sexual problems. Even if patients seek help for sexual problems, there are few medical care professionals who can cope with patients' sexual problems. Medical staff need to take a great deal of interest in patients' sexual problems, and should try to provide all possible support to help patients and their wives.
The author described sexual problems encountered by hemodialysis patients and many psychiatric factors related to male dialysis patients in a chart, and described some related treatments and forms of rehabilitation. Many factors, such as biology, psycho-social factors, neurotic factors, relations between husbands and wives, influence their sexual relations. Principle treatments are counseling, behavior therapy, psychotherapy and therapy to improve blood circulation. However, it is vitally important that we execute treatment and rehabilitation in a step-by-step fashion. If patients and their families cannot execute even the best treatment method, there is no meaning. The medical staffs must not force any treatment.
