[ Summary ] In hemodialysis patients, spleen index (SI) in male patients was greater than female patients. SI showed weak positive correlation with hemodialysis periods, and negative correlation with age. SI in patients with HCV antibody was significantly greater than in patients without HCV antibody. There was no relationship between SI and hemodialysis periods in patients with or without HCV antibody. SI didn't show any correlation with red blood cell counts (RBCC), but showed significant negative correlations with white blood cell counts and platelet counts. These results suggested that SI in hemodialysis patients depends on HCV infections, and even if hemodialysis patients suffered with hypersplenism, RBCC would be corrected by administration of recombinant human erythropoietin.
