[ Summary ] Lack of protein intake, energy intake and exercise, along with inflammation, cause mal nutrition in CAPD patients. Lack of protein and energy intake aggravate protein catabolism, while excessive intake of protein increases levels of BUN and serum phosphorus. Inflammatory cytokines accelerate catabolism and supress alubumin synthesis. Exercise promotes anabolism with muscle hypertrophy, and improves metabolism of glucose and lipids.
In nutrional management of CAPD patients, it is important to consider appropriate protein intake in relation to dialysis dosage, peritoneal loss of protein, adequate energy intake, control of infection and inflammation and exercise therapy for each patient.
