[ Summary ] | We briefly described common esophageal diseases. Gastroesophageal reflux disease refers to the pathologic consequences of the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, manifesting various symptoms. Endoscopic examination and empiric trials of PPI contribute to the diagnosis of this disease. Achalasia is an esophageal emptying disorder caused by absence of esophageal peristalsis and incomplete LES relaxation. Pneumatic balloon dilation of LES offers long-term remission. Esophageal candidiasis is quite common in endoscopic findings, but most of the cases do not require antifungal treatment. Endoscopy is the most useful method to diagnose and to treat esophageal varices and Mallory-Weiss syndrome. |
