[ Summary ] The average age of patients undergoing dialysis has been rising in recent years. The causes of patient death is frequently cardiac insufficiency and cerebrovascular diseases. This is considered to be attributable to arterio sclerosis.
Dietary regimen, in particular, plays an important role in the prevention of arteriosclerosis. Dietary therapy is effective in the treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
A restricted diet constitutes the basis of therapy for hypertension. The details of restricted diets include restricted salt intake for patients on maintenance dialysis. The basic lipid energy ratio should be under 25% in hyperlipidemia patients. It is important not only to restrict foods containing high levels of saturated fatty acids but also to try to include soybean protein, EPA and DHA, and antioxidant vitamins. Prevention of the progress of arteriosclerosis is considered to require appropriate dietary habits and an overall review of daily habits, including refraining from smoking.
