[ Summary ] The main cerebrovascular events in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis include cerebral hemorrhaging, cerebral infarction and subarachnoidal hemorrhage. Hypertension and atherosclerosis are the most important risk factors associated with cerebrovascuar events in these patients. Moreover, the abrupt change of blood pressure and the use of anticoagulant agents in hemodialysis treatment increases the likelyhood of the onset of cerebrovascular events. Although the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular events in hemodialysis patients is similar to nondialysis patients, it is fundamentally important to consider the characteristics of these hemodialysis patients. Cerebrovascular events in hemodialysis patients lower the QOL for these patients as well as their life expectancy therefore, the prevention of these risk factors associated with the onset of cerebrovascular events is very important.
