[ Summary ] The diagnosis of dementia incudes the following;
1) differential diagnosis from other dementia-like disorders, such as amnesia, delirium, and depressive states. These disorders are differentiated from dementia, but they are often associated with it.
2) assessment of the stage of dementia, judged from precise histories and neuropsy chiatric examinations.
3) diagnosis of the brain disease causing dementia through physical and neurologic examinations, laboratory examinations, and brain imaging, such as CT, MRI, or SPECT. Early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are amnesia, disorientation for time, and less often, a depressive state or delusions. On the other hand, the early symptoms of vascular dementia are more complicated and the characteristic symptoms are disturbed gait and urinary incontinence, in the early stages.
