[ Summary ] Clinical diagnosis of deep-seated mycoses is difficult. Serodiagnosis is being developed for the early diagnosis of deep-seated mycoses. The detection of (1,3)-beta-glucan from the sera is a useful method for the diagnosis of Candidiasis and Aspergillosis. The test for ELISA by the detection of galactomannan of Aspergillus has a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a useful tool for the detection of fungal DNA from the sera. Azole antifungal agents are effective for the treatment of patients with candidiasis or cryptococcosis. However, resistant strains of Candida albicans were isolated from patients with oropharyngeal candidiasis infected with HIV after the fluconazole treatment. Guidelines for the treatment of deep-seated mycoses will be established for prevention of the infection by resistant strains.
