[ Summary ] Our trial was planed to clarify the usefullness of the critical path (CP) in treating 10 outpatients with chronic renal failure. Their original deseases consisted of 9 with CGN and 1 with DM-nephropathy. We instructed them in treatment of chronic renal failure, renal functions, and the importance of dietary protein restriction, according to the critical path method. We experienced 2 variances, cerebral infarction and heart failure. These 2 patients dropped out in this study.
CP is very useful for developing cooperation between doctors and co-medicals, to guidance for them and prevent wasting time, providing informed consent for and comfort patients. During the same period, we selected 10 other patients, receiving low protein diets, as a control group. The CP group exceed the control group in dietary protein restriction. Our team work has been strengthened by using the critical path method and we were able effectively conduct this study.
We concluded that the critical path is a useful and effective method for the education and therapy of patients with chronic renal failure.
