[ Summary ] Chronic dialysis patients with nodular hyper plasia of parathyroid glands resist to oral or intravenous calcitriol pulse therapy, because of markedly reduced numbers of calcitriol receptors and calcium sensing receptors in nodular parathyroid hyperplasia. Percutaneous ethanol injection therapy for parathyroid glands is effective to suppress parathyroid hyperfunction, but there are several problems, such as recurrent nerve palsy and pains. Direct calcitriol injections into enlarged parathyroid glands were reported as an alternative treatment for control of parathyroid hyperfunction with few side effects.
