[ Summary ] Strokes are an important cause of death in chronic dialysis patients. This study summarized the results of an epidemiological study on the prevalence and incidence of strokes in dialysis patients in Okinawa.
The high incidence of strokes was explained by insufficient control of hypertension and uremia, malnutrition, and a chronic state of inflammation. The high acceptance rate of elderly and sick patients may also contribute to the high incidence of strokes. Better control of hypertension and nutrition may be effective to reduce morbidity and mortality, due to strokes. Renal transplantation is another treatment of choice to prevent strokes.
