[ Summary ] Since late 1960, patients registered on dialysis have been increasing every year and still tending to increase, because of technical improvement in dialysis therapy and financial support by the government.
Cardiovascular complications (CVC) is the leading cause of mortality in dialysis patients, accounting for about 50% of the deaths, at any period. Then, the diagnosis, prevention and treatments of CVC in dialysis patients are very important. The development and progression of CVC in dialysis patients can be contributed by specific additional cardiovascular risk factors such as volume overload with consequent hypertension, anemia, disturbance of Ca-P metabolism, and possibly accumulation of metabolic products, etc. The therapeutic improvement of CVC, however, by PTCA, CABG, and new drugs may improve the death rate in dialysis patients.
