[ Summary ] The training of able co-medical staff in charge of diabetes education under the supervision of a physician began to be discussed in 1993 to contain the marked increase in the number of cases with diabetes mellitus and its complications in Japan and to promote the health and welfare of diabetics.
The concept of the training was to improve skills to educate diabetics so that they can take self-control of diabetes following appropriate treatment policy of the physician. The Japan Certified Diabetes Educator System and its Administrative Organization were established in Feb. 2000 and the first certification test is scheduled to be held at the 11th March 2001. Three certification criteria required of Japan certified diabetes educator are accurate knowledge of diabetes mellitus in general, proficient diabetes education skills, and diabetes education practice based on the Medical Service Law in Japan.
We hope a number of dieticians and nurses to appreciate the significance of this certification system and try to take the certification test.
