[ Summary ] The high incidence of cardiovascular complications in diabetic uremic patients indicates that atherosclerosis is highly accelerating in the population. Diabetic uremic patients are exposed to risk factors for atherosclerosis, associated with diabetes as well as uremia. The risk factors from diabetes include dyslipidemia, high blood glucose level, obesity, hypertension, hyperinsulinemia, dysfunction of platelets and protein glycation, whereas those from uremia include hypertension, dyslipidemia and abnormal calcium metabolism. Dyslipidemia, in particular, plays a crucial role in developing atherosclerosis in diabetic uremic patients. It has been reported that uremic diabetic patients show a more atherogenic profile for lipid levels than non-diabetic uremic patients.
