[ Summary ] In daily home hemodialysis, there is concern that with frequent different site punctures there may be an increasing incidence of thrombosis, stenosis or obstruction. It has been reported that complications are fewer when the constant site puncture method (i.e., buttonhole method) is used to puncture the blood access vessel for treatment with repeated homedialysis, as compaired to when the different-dite puncture method is employed.
For successful in when using the buttonhole method, it may be crucial that during the initial period the same experienced medical staff member punctures the access vessel each time. However, this may not be a realistic goal in most dialysis facilities.
Therefore, we developed a timesaving method to create a fixed channel for buttonhole punctures. In this method, at the end of each hemodialysis session, we replace the plastic cannula by a stick, then remove it at the start of the next hemodialysis session. By using this method, a fixed channel is created, through which a dull needle is inserted by using the buttonhole method.
