[ Summary ] Surgical procedures are usually adopted for the repair of stenotic lesions associated with hemodialysis access. Currently, a technique for interventional angioplasty, called Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasy (PTA) is becoming popular. Balloon PTA is the most populartype in Japan. However, a problem with balloon PTA is the short duration, (several months), of hemodialysis access patency. In order to prolong access patency, a technique for stent insertion in to the stenotic lesion, after balloon PTA, was devised. But the results from this method were not markedly different. The results from other PTA methods are similar. Though PTA is an excellent technique to avoid access loss, a dramatically new method or device, to prolong access patency, is needed.
