[ Summary ] In hemodialysis patients, hematocit levels have a significant impact on the patient's survival. Previous studies have reported that patients with hematocrit levels of 33 to 36% had a significantly decreased risk of survival, compared with those with lower Ht levels, and that the lower Ht group had a greater risk of survival.
Although the mechanism by which higher Ht patients survive longer has not been fully elucidated, an improved hyperhemodynamic state, and improvements in states of immunodysfunction, and mal-nutrition may be, at least in part, contributing factors to this improved survival.
These results will become important evidence in determining adequate target Ht level under recombinant human erythropoietin.
