[ Summary ] Malnutrition is an independent factor associated with morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, nutritional management must be included in follow-up and treatment of these patients. In ordet to achieve an adequate nutritional state, it is occasionally necessary to use specific drug therapy such as intradialytic parenteral nutrition with amino acid solutions, recombinant human growth hormone, or L-carnitine.
These drugs have been found to have a positive effect on the nutritional state and should be used as necessary for malnourished patients on dialysis.
