[ Summary ] Carnitine is an essential nutrient for production of energy and maintenance of physiological functions. Carnitine levels, in hemodialysis patients, are significantly decreased because of dietary restrictions and direct removal through hemodialysis. We have suggested that carnitine deficiency is involved in pathologies of dialysis myopathy, dialysis heart and poor response to EPO. Carnitine deficiency is a blind spot in Japanese hemodialysis therapy.
