[ Summary ] Several kinds of peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions with different compositions are commercially available from various manufacture in Japan. In practical use of these PD solutions, the concentrations of glucose and calcium should be paid attention to attain adequate therapeutic effects. Biocompatibility of PD solutions is currently being addressed in long-term maintenance PD treatment, and high glucose concentration, high osmolality, low pH and high lactate concentration have been in criminated as unphysiologic factors. Attempts have been made to improve those unphysiologic factors in PD fluids. Neutral PD solution and polyglucose (icodextrin), bicarbonate and amino acid solutions, though not yet commercially available in Japan, are anticipated as new PD solutions which will deliver beneficial effects for PD patients.
