[ Summary ] Our recent experience with patients over the age of 80 years undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) between 1991 and 1999 is reviewed. There were 10 patients, 5 females and 5 males, who started CAPD therapy at this age. Three patients started CAPD therapy after the age of 85 years old.
CAPD in patients above 80 yeas of age is acceptable both on the basis of their somatic situation and quality of life.
Though not commonly favored, CAPD can be the ideal for the elderly because of relatively minimal hemodynamic stress. We need to establish an adequate social service and supportive care-system for elderly CAPD patients.
